The Ground Remembers the Sky
This work continues an ongoing investigation into national borders and institutional structures, taking discarded components of a Panavia Tornado fighter aircraft as its central material. Deployed from the Cold War era through military operations in the Middle East and the Balkans, the Tornado survives here as wreckage—a material shadow of the violence produced by the machinery of the state.
The components are housed within wooden crates that function as shipping enclosures. Each interior has been treated differently, through structures including tiled surfaces and expanding-foam infill. The installation also incorporates a crate damaged by customs during transit, together with a base printed with Persian carpet motifs, bringing the tangible traces of institutional violence into the exhibition space alongside the geopolitical contexts with which they are entangled.
