Love hotels are common in the streets of Japan. Unlike usual hotels, love hotels could provide special services for lovers to enjoy sex. About 7000 love hotels in Japan are located in different places. However, sex is an embarrassing topic in this country in which the sex industry is developed.
Out of this curiosity, in June 2022, I transformed a gallery into a love hotel, which is a facility in Japan designed for people to have sex in.
In the room, "communication" was completely prohibited (to what extent "communication" was up to the guests' judgment). By imitating the publicity methods of the real love hotels, I made some leaflets to attract customers.
The light board of my love hotel was set at the gallery entrance. Like the real love hotel, the guests could go through the procedures of checking in and out without communicating with the manager. finally presented it as a project. Since it was an appointment system, only a certain number of people had entered the space. I made the questionnaire into a light board, which only displayed the words rather than the room directly, hoping to bring other audience imagination from the guests' feelings.


日本の日常風景のひとつである「ラブホテル」は、中国には存在しない。オモテ向きには言及されることのないこの空間が、しかし日本全国に堂々と存在することを、私はいつも奇妙に感じていた。「その場限り」で「日常と接続することのない」ラブホテルは、普段性愛について語ることの少ない日本人の日常感覚とどう繋がっているのか？また、客室内に凝らされたテーマ設定や内装は、いかに性愛を惹きつける要素となっているか？ラブホテルの「非日常性」は、アートと共通点があるのではないかと考え、それを個展のテーマとした。
「ラブホテルは、日本社会でどんな役割を果たしているのか？」という疑問に答えるため、2022年5月、私はポップアップラブホテル「Hotel kotoba」をギャラリー空間に設置しました。貸しギャラリーは住宅街にあり、小学校の向かいにあります。この場所にラブホテルが存在することに驚きを持つ人もいましたが、多くの人々に注目され、社会的な議論を呼び起こすことになりました。このプロジェクトを通じて、ラブホテルという空間の役割や意味について再考することができました。
